Characters

Characters

I am going to be looking at the films 'The Greatest Showman' and 'A Quiet Place' and analysing how characters are introduced to the audience. I have chosen these two films as they are both from different genres; 'The Greatest Showman' is a musical and 'A Quiet Place' is a horror film. Therefore, this will allow me to look at the similarities and differences of the presentation of characters in opening sequences.

The Greatest Showman:

A Quiet Place:

Both of these opening scenes focus on the introduction of characters. In the opening scene for 'The Greatest Showman' it begins by showing the different shots of the main character. The pace speeds up and there is the introduction of the other characters in the film. However the characters aren't developed. The scene ends by showing the main character by himself and then switches to show a young boy, which appears to be him creating a sense of mystery for the audience. In the opening scene for 'A Quiet Place' all the main characters are shown from the start, they are all a family. One of the characters is deaf shown by the switch between near silence and sound effects. At the end of the scene the little boy dies which leaves it on a cliffhanger.
