My Genre - Horror
For my coursework I am going to be creating an opening sequence and titles and the genre I have chosen will be horror. As I have chosen this genre I have also done some research about horror films.

About horror films:

Horror films are unsettling films that create fear, dread and tension to the audience watching. Examples of features of horror times contain death, evil, supernatural powers/creatures and witchcraft. The thriller genre also links to horror especially with films containing a killer or mad person. Horror films date back over 100 years and were developed from gothic novels from writers such as Mary Shelley, Emily Bronte and Robert Louis Stevenson, as well as myths, ghost stories and witchcraft.

Types of horror films:
  • Supernatural/Possession 
  • Psychological
  • Haunted house
  • Zombies/Monsters
  • Slasher/Killer
Conventions:
  • SETTING [eg. dark streets/areas, isolated places, dark woods, houses, asylum, graveyards].

  • ICONOGRAPHY - costume, props, lighting and colours [dark colouring and lighting].
  • CHARACTER TYPES - hero, non-believer, victim, evil character/villian, romantic couple, hysterical character.
  • NARRATIVE/THEMES [eg. supernatural, evil, zombies, revenge].
  • SOUND - diegetic/non-diegetic, contrapuntal.
  • TECHNICAL CODES - camerawork and editing.
Typical character types in horrors:
  • FEMALE VICTIM - vulnerable character, usually young and attractive, their character helps to build suspense.

  • HERO- stereotypically a strong man character, in newer films may be a female character.
  • NON-BELIEVER - male or female, cocky character trying to convince the other people they are overreacting, normally the first to be killed.
  • HYSTERICAL CHARACTER - usually a female.
  • EVIL CHARACTER - has the biggest impact on the audience and causes fear and suspension, eg. evil killer, ghost, demonic possession or monster.
  • ROMANTIC COUPLE - too occupied with each other to notice the killer, audience gets annoyed by them.
