Opening Scene 5 - The Women in Black

The Woman in Black

I am going to be looking at the opening scene for 'The Woman in Black' and analysing the different conventions of genre.

  • Setting - in a room of a house, looks old fashioned.
  • Three girls (protagonists) playing with dolls having a tea party - they all look very happy.
  • Contrapuntal music - creepy and sinister.
  • All turn their heads as if someone has walked into the room
  • They stand up in sync and start walking on and breaking the dolls and tea cups.
  • In sync the walk up to the three windows, open them and jump out.
  • Sounds of screaming coming from a women.
  • Mise-en-scene - their costumes indicate the era and show that they are young.
