Location/Setting

Location/Setting

I am going to be looking at the films 'Maleficent' and 'Wall-E' and analysing how location/settings are introduced to the audience. I have chosen these two films as they are both from different genres; 'Maleficent' is an action/fantasy film and 'Wall-E' is a science- fiction/adventure film. Therefore, this will allow me to look at the similarities and differences of the presentation of location/settings in opening sequences.

Maleficent:

Wall-E:

The aim of both of these opening scenes is to establish the setting/location of the film to the audience. In 'Maleficent' and there are a series of high angle aerial shots showing where the film takes place. In Maleficent the shots are showing all the greenery and the beautiful lakes, the windmill and the mountains. There is a voiceover explaining about the different locations in the film. Towards the end of the opening scene there is the introduction of the main character. However in Wall-E it begins by showing the galaxy until it zooms into earth where it is very foggy. There is also high angle, aerial shots however some of them are canted to disorientate the audience. The shots show many buildings and rocks. The colour scheme differs a lot from the opening scene of 'Maleficent' as the film is showing what could happen to the earth in the future vs the beauty of the fantasy kingdom in 'Maleficent'. The main character is also introduced towards the end of the opening scene in 'Wall-E'.
