Analysis of the way titles are presented

The way titles are presented in opening sequences

I am going to be analysing the different ways in which opening titles are presented in opening sequences, as I am going to be creating the titles for my own opening sequence. Although the conventions of titles are all very similar, the ways they are presented vary in each film. I have analysed four different examples, all from the horror genre.

THE SHINING:

  • Cast and Crew names
  • Director - the first name shown.
  • Producer.
  • Main Actors.
  • Name of film.
  • Based on a novel by Stephen King.
  • Sans Serif font - very basic.
  • The cast and crew names are being showed over a scene that looks very nice. This scenery and the use of bright blue font contrasts with the genre of the film. However, the sinister music indicates the genre to the audience and adds confusion.

INSIDIOUS:

  • Production company names.
  • Cast and Crew names
  • Director.
  • Producer.
  • Main Actors.
  • Name of film.
  • The names are each shown in front of a different creepy location. The background is in black and white and the font is in red, which indicates the genre and makes the names stand out. The sinister music also indicates that this is from the horror genre.

SPLIT:

  • Production company names.
  • Cast and Crew names.
  • Director
  • Producer
  • Main Actors
  • The names are shown over a black background in a sans serif font, but scenes from the film are occasionally shown.

IT:

  • Director.
  • Producer.
  • Based on a novel by Stephen King.
  • Names of main actors aren't shown.
  • The titles are presented over the film and only a few names are shown. The names are all in a white serif font except for the name of the film which is in red to indicate the genre.
